EAST JORDAN -- Those making significant contributions to the East Jordan community were recognized for their work Saturday during the East Jordan Chamber of cheap nike air max shoes and meeting at Castle Farms.

It was a night during which awards for citizen of the year, ambassador of the year, spirit award and business of the year were presented to individuals and groups that dedicated time and effort to charity and volunteer endeavors over the course of the entire year.

Betty Pearsall was presented with the citizen of the year award during the event.

"Our citizen of the year is the type of person that most communities cannot do without because, behind the scenes, they do whatever is necessary to make groups function positively and productively," said chamber director Mary Faculak. "(She) has a long, dedicated and continuing history of outstanding community involvement."

Pearsall has served as a board member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 30 years.

The 88-year-old volunteers on Mondays at the VFW helping with food preparation for Monday night bingo.

On Tuesdays, she volunteers at Grandvue and has been a volunteer for almost 30 years to take patients on outings, serve meals, visit residents or assist with fundraisers.

On Wednesdays, she is a familiar face at the East Jordan Senior Center where she serves on the board of directors.

Fridays, Pearsall can be found at the East Jordan Senior Center helping where needed and greeting newcomers.

"It is (her) positive words, compassionate presence, time and energy, insight about the needs of seniors and veterans and the sincere caring that are models for all who work with her," said Faculak.

The ambassador of the year award was presented to Matt Hamilton, founder and director of the Shoe Club.

To become part of the club, sixth-grade students read two motivational books, write a paper on them and write a list of goals. In order to remain a member, seventh- and eighth-grade students are required to complete community service and write additional papers. Once they've completed all the steps, the students are able to bring a shoe to be hung in the classroom.

The shoes hang as a reminder to work hard, make good choices, not bully others and walk in each other's shoes.

The East Jordan Save-A-Lot was named business of the year.

"They are sincerely involved both financially and with their time to the area," said Faculak of the many charity and community events supported by business owners Scott Roggenbeck and Frank Leonard.

The East Jordan Lions Club received the chamber's spirit award this year.

Projects of the club include providing two scholarships for cheap nike air max, providing financial support for projects focused on sight, health and youth projects, donating funding toward eye glasses for local residents, maintaining the Tourist Park pavilion, assisting with construction and funding of the community digital sign, providing candy for the Community Christmas stockings, organizing and sponsoring the annual Easter egg hunt and decorating the historic Engine No. 6 for the holidays.
